If You Are Over 55, Get These Discounts Before 2020

Peter Wright, December 2019

There are many special discounts that are available to seniors. Retirees are offered discounts at many retailers, restaurants, parks and even on public transport. But you won’t get these discounts unless you ask for them. Simply ask the question, “Do you offer a senior discount?” and see how much you can save.

And did you know there are special senior discounts that are available only online? Many seniors were shocked to find out that they could save as much as $6,000 by using these online discounts and little-known government programs. Here is a list of discounts and offers seniors can take advantage of:

1. Save On Healthcare Costs

Health insurance has forever changed with President Trump. Having negotiated heavily with the health care industry, Trump has given Americans much lower premiumsin most cases for the same, or even better, coverage. But in order to take advantage of this, you have to first check which plans are better but also cheaper than the one you have.

2. Cut Up To $350 Off Your Mortgage, Every Month

Still unknown to many is a brilliant Mortgage Program called the Flex Modification Program (FMP) could benefit Americans and reduce their payments by as much as $350/mo! You could bet the banks aren't too thrilled about losing all that profit and might secretly hope homeowners don't find out before time runs out.

So while the banks happily wait for this program to end, the Government is making a final push and urging homeowners to take advantage. This program could end at any given time in 2019, but the good news is that once you're in, you're in. If lowering your payments, paying off your mortgage faster, and even taking some cash out would help you, it's vital you act now and see if you could qualify for FMP or a better rate in today's marketplace.

3. Save On Auto Insurance

Drivers don’t always realize that they may be overpaying for car insurance. You could receive a large discount by shopping for a new insurer and if you live in certain zip codes, you may get extremely low rates. If you haven't compared quotes recently, even if you have a low rate, you could still be paying too much. Fortunately, millions of smart drivers have used Provide Insurance's free service to save hundreds on their insurance bills.

4. Save On Your Grocery Bill

Farm Fresh: 5% discount every Tuesday and Thursday.

Hy-Vee: Varies by location. Often 5% off on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Some stores set the age at 65+.

Piggly Wiggly: Varies by location. Often 5% off one day a week.

BI-LO: 5% savings on Wednesdays with a Senior Bonus Card.

Harris Teeter: 5% off every Thursday.

Kroger: Often 5% off on Wednesdays, though Kroger has ended senior discounts in some markets.

Publix: Varies by location. Often 5% off on Wednesdays.

ShopRite: Varies by location. Often 5% to 10% off on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

5. Better Medicare Coverage For Less

Medicare is great, but as everyone knows, it doesn’t cover everything 100%. But things are changing in a big way for seniors. Because depending on your zip code, you could be paying thousands less in medical expenses with a new Medicare supplemental plan. If you check and see options available, you’re golden, and you can be on your way to putting thousands of dollars back into your pocket.
